Today is Day 6 of Happiness Month and it will be continuing all month long. As you can tell by my daily #HappinessHappens tweets and Facebook posts, I’ve been a member for a long, long time!
Today, to add happiness to your life: Be Cheerful! Do you choose to focus on the negative or will you make the decision to be cheerful? In fact, why not bring some cheer to others! Tell a joke. Do something silly. Or just smile. :D The word “cheerful” is a adjective and that means it would be a word that describes US… It means:
- Noticeably happy and optimistic.
- Causing happiness by its nature or appearance
Someone who is living with a spouse who is having an affair may very well wonder “How in the WORLD am I supposed to be cheerful while the one I love is betraying me?” I have to admit–it is a pretty daunting task! But let me ask you this–if there were two people with whom you had to spend time (for example at work), would you rather spend time with the one who is consistently grouchy, critical, pessimistic, and just looks messy? Or would you rather spend time with the one who is consistently upbeat, positive, optimistic and overall looks pretty good? I bet most of us would enjoy the time more with the CHEERFUL person. So we want this to be an adjective that describes US…someone who is cheerful, who causes happiness by their nature AND appearance.
What can you to if you just don’t feel cheerful? Make the decision to BE Cheerful anyway. When you think a negative, grouchy, or judgmental thought, stop yourself and substitute a cheerful thought. If you have to…make a list of cheerful things. And get back to the young man or young lady who used to joke around, be silly, and smile. If you look at your own self today and in all honesty think “Well this would probably not be an adjective that describes me” then choose to change that–today. BE cheerful!

You know too often I hear young people say “He doesn’t make me happy” or “I wish she would make me happy” but you know what? Happiness is not something that someone else “makes” you feel. You make choices in your life that can affect your happiness….and ultimately you CHOOSE whether to be happy every day or not. You can also choose to do things that would add happiness to your life every single today.
